Who Hits Himself? - Poem by Laurie Van der Hart

Who hits himself
Or herself
With full force
On the head
Repeatedly
Till it aches,
On purpose?

Who runs around
Slapping walls
Flicking towels
Throwing books
At the ceiling
In the middle of
The night?

Who buries himself
Head and all
Under the blankets
On a hot night
Or keeps jumping
Out of bed to
Turn on the light?

What could it be
That would make
A sane woman
Suddenly
Act like a madman
And behave so
Irrationally?

Two tiny, whining wings
Six long slender legs
A needle-like mouth
And ravenous belly
Are all it takes
To rob someone
Of his sanity
