Aotearoa Discovery, And War - Poem by Robert Murray Smith

New Zealand, according to Maori
fokelore was fished up by Maui.

Kupe, from Haiwaiki, in Polynesia,
discovered the country in the 10th
century, according to some tribes.

New Zealand, has two Islands, the North,
and the South.

Discovered first by the Dutch, Abel Tasman, then
by Captain Cook in 1776, he mapped the country
in three successive visits.

In 1840, the Treaty of Waitangi was signed with
various Maori Chiefs.

This did not stop Maori war with the colonists,
the British sending troops from as far away as India.

Only some tribes were involved, but many were killed
by the British. The war ended in the late 1872.
