() |() |() I Do Not See How I Am Capable Of Love - Poem by Annie Cordelia Adams

I do not see how I am capable of love
Whereas thousands were meant for solitude
How I ever thought I could fit my hand in that glove
I will never comprehend; ever know the mood
I am a selfish little brute; not bent on being whole
Or meant to fall in love; or be part of anyone
I am not a giving, helping, conscientious soul,
Not likely to reach for your hand

I do not see how I'm capable of love
Whereas everyone else is standing by the Sea
Hands in each other's, whispering to each beloved
Say something! Acknowledge and agree?
For whatever I say to you does not become me:
I stand by the Sea waiting to be set free
